Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free antivirus protection suite from Microsoft.

It comes with following features:

  • Real time protection
  • System scanning
  • System cleaning
  • Windows Firewall integration
  • Live system behavior monitoring
  • Dynamic signature service
  • Rootkit protection
  • Protection against false positives
  • Network inspection system

Microsoft Security Essentials runs on Windows XP (32 bit only), Windows Vista (32/64 bit) and Windows 7 (32/64 bit). Apart from being free for personal and home use, it is also free to small businesses of up to 10 computers.

I have installed in on a laptop running Windows 7 Home Professional and on a netbook running Windows 7 Starter – in both instances replacing AVG. Installation was very quick and easy, and once finished, Microsoft Security Essentials updated itself with latest definitions and preformed a quick scan on the system.

I have found Microsoft Security Essentials  to be less demanding on resources than some of the other free antivirus products available. Various test results that can be found on the Internet found it to have a very good detection rate, and generally better than other free antivirus products available.

If you are looking for a free antivirus protection, be sure to check out Microsoft Security Essentials.
