How To: Setup FreeDOS in VirtualBox

DOS in 21st century? Why not. This article explains how to set up FreeDOS on VirtualBox virtual machine.

FreeDOS is a free DOS compatible system. You can get it here.
VirtualBox allows you to create virtual machines. You can get it here.

Step 1: Download and install VirtualBox. Download FreeDOS installation package.

Step 2: Open VirtualBox and click on “New” to create new virtual machine. You can choose “Windows 3.1” as OS in the setup wizard – this will create virtual machine with hardware specs that are good for running FreeDOS.

Step 3: Start virtual machine. Once started, First Run Wizard will appear, which will help you install the OS. Select FreeDOS image file when prompted.

Step 4: Follow FreeDOS setup. This part also includes hard disk partitioning and setup. Just choose default options here.

Step 5: When prompted, select packages you wish to install. You can leave default selections here.

Step 6: That’s it. Once FreeDOS setup has finished, “eject” CD image from virtual machine, restart and FreeDOS will boot up.

  1. The procedure is not clear. From the download site for Freedos, only the iso files and image file for Freedos are provided. These files can not be used by Virtual Box.
